Comprehensive spectral editing functionality

Overhauled Spectrogram

WaveLab 9.5 offers a new, modern and better looking Spectrogram with many additional display settings to allow you to meticulously find and edit that particular frequency you are looking for. The Spectrogram offers a customizable view, display settings, color schemes with presets, psychoacoustic scales and all this with unprecedented speed and performance.

Pro Elements

Brand-new Wavelet display

Alongside the new Spectrogram, WaveLab Pro 9.5 introduces a Wavelet display that allows you to visualize the musical content of your audio file more accurately, since the analysis is based on musical pitch scaling. The Wavelet display performs a dynamic energy distribution in the whole frequency range, showing a higher time resolution in high frequencies and a higher frequency resolution in lower frequencies. As well as the new Spectrogram, the Wavelet display is also highly customizable and presets can be stored.

Pro

State-of-the-art Spectrum Editor

In accordance with the new ribbon and tabs concept introduced in WaveLab 9, version 9.5 now offers a dedicated Spectrum tab, with a wide range of brand-new tools and functions that enable very accurate yet flexible spectral editing, always available right there when and where you need them.

Alongside the standard rectangle selection tool, many new selection options have been added to the toolset including Lasso for drawing a free shape of selection, Brush that allows you to paint a selection and a Magic Wand that automatically analyses and selects the surrounding spectral content with similar dB magnitude with a single mouse click. It is also possible to automatically select one or more harmonics of a selected fundamental frequency.

And not only the amount of selection tools is larger, but also a range of new processing functionality has been added, e.g. the possibility to add a watermark to the Spectrogram, be it text or a picture as well as several fine-tuning settings for the most demanding audio engineers.

Pro

Audio Inpainting

You may have heard of the Inpainting terminology from graphics editing software, and now WaveLab Pro 9.5 has implemented it for audio. Audio Inpainting is Steinberg’s patent-pending technology to remove unwanted noise from your audio material and replace it meaningfully by analyzing the spectral information of the surrounding area and recreating the missing content in a logical way. This can also be used in other cases, such as to regenerate missing audio caused by an audio dropout or to get rid of audio artifacts.

You can set up the resolution and precision of the algorithm, the persistence of the original audio material, as well as the range of the area to be used as reference by using the Show Surrounding Region option to achieve different results.

Pro

RestoreRig

RestoreRig is WaveLab’s new plug-in suite comprising three modules: DeNoiser, DeBuzzer and DeClicker (the latter consisting also of a DePopper and a DeCrackler) unified in one single user interface. With a Gain control, a Level and a spectrum meter, the new RestoreRig offers a very flexible and accurate restoration toolset to detect and remove unwanted noise and audio artifacts in real time. Also, each module has an independent Noise Listening mode to monitor only the noise that is being removed from the audio. With its high-quality, freshly coded algorithms and modern user interface, RestoreRig replaces the seven-year-old restoration plug-in suite from Sonnox.

Pro Elements

DeClicker

The DeClicker module consists of three different sections, each with their own Noise Reduction Level knob, that help you identify and remove short impulse noises such as clicks, pops and crackles independently from each other. The meters of each section show the amount of noise that is being removed from your signal. If the algorithm detects too much material being removed and possibly impacts transient quality, the meter will go red.

DeNoiser

The DeNoiser module is useful to remove stationary noises. RestoreRig’s DeNoiser offers two sections: Dynamic, to remove continuous noise that evolves over time; and Static, for stationary noise that remains the same throughout the whole duration of the file. The Static section offers a Learn function to record the noise you want to remove. The DeNoiser also offers four different process-algorithms that are suitable for different types of audio material, depending on its musical content.

DeBuzzer

RestoreRig’s DeBuzzer is basically a dynamic filter that is used to remove low-frequency noise with a fundamental frequency of around 50 Hz to 60 Hz and its harmonic content. Thanks to the Level and Sensitivity knobs, the DeBuzzer is very flexible in defining the amount of buzz and hum to be removed while also considering the changes in level of the original audio file. The detection of the fundamental frequency can be done either manually or automatically.

New and enhanced plug-ins

MasterRig improvements

Introduced in WaveLab Pro 9, MasterRig is the most powerful mastering plug-in suite available today, and in version 9.5 it has now gotten even better!

  • The Maximizer in the Limiter module now includes a new Modern mode algorithm as well as a Mix controller, opening up more possibilities to achieve the perfect sound.

  • The Equalizer module also includes new functionality, adding two new cut slopes of 6 dB and 96 dB to the first and last EQ bands, as well as an independent Linear Phase mode for each band.

Tube Compressor

While the sound quality of a plug-in is of most importance, a nice and modern look can also be inspiring when adding effects to your music, which is why our warm-sounding Tube Compressor got a very stylish new user interface. And not only that: there’s also a new Character parameter that adds harmonics to the higher frequencies while not saturating the lower frequencies, making your sound crisp and bright.

Pro Elements

Vintage Compressor

WaveLab’s Vintage Compressor also got a new, better-looking user interface that will make you think you are working with analog gear when using it. Just like with the Tube Compressor, the Vintage Compressor also adds a new parameter, namely a Mix control that allows you to balance the compressed and uncompressed signals. This addition makes it possible to perform parallel compression with only one parameter.

Pro

Other redesigned plug-ins

  • The Maximizer not only got a face-lift, but also boasts the same in-depth algorithm overhaul as MasterRig’s Limiter. Choose between the Classic mode and the new Modern mode to get a much richer sound, while keeping it transparent, bright and clear.

  • The new AutoPan offers a much bigger variety and flexibility to creatively play with your sound in space. Make use of various shapes, random modes, panorama settings and more — all quickly accessible via the new user interface.

  • Similar to the current Cubase and Nuendo versions, WaveLab’s plug-in set is being constantly updated. Dynamic plug-ins such as Brickwall Limiter, Compressor, Expander, Gate and Envelope Shaper received a whole GUI redesign to help you get the most out of your state-of-the-art effects processors.

Pro Elements (partly)

Batch Processor plug-ins

WaveLab Pro 9.5 is also an excellent tool for sound designers and sound library creators, since many new features are tailored to those working with a large number of audio files that need to be polished to the highest standards. To facilitate and speed up your work, two new Batch Processor plug-ins have been added:

  • Audio Mixer that mixes an audio file, e.g. a beep or a watermark, into other audio files at defined intervals. This can be very useful when creating demo versions of your audio files before publishing them.

  • Delay next Process Activation that delays the processing starting point of the next plug-in in the effects-chain for a defined time, e.g. to avoid processing and consequently damaging the transients or the attack of drum samples when using batch processing.

Pro

Other Improvements

Live Spectrogram

WaveLab Pro 9.5 is the most sophisticated solution for spectral editing and as such, it must include a Live Spectrogram meter.

The Live Spectrogram offers a real-time visual representation of the frequency spectrum of your audio file during playback. Should you have any real-time plug-in effects loaded, the live spectrogram will show you how those plug-ins are affecting the spectral information of your audio as it is being processed. Changes in any effects parameters during playback will be dynamically displayed as well. This is a very nice addition to the Metering section of WaveLab Pro, helping you keep an eye on the whole frequency range of your files when using real-time processors.

The live Spectrogram is also useful to monitor the frequency content of an audio signal as it is being recorded.

Pro

High DPI support

WaveLab 9.5 is the first Steinberg application to offer full support for modern high-resolution displays throughout the whole application, excluding the plug-in set (for now). For more information regarding high DPI support in WaveLab, please visit the knowledge base article.

Pro Elements

Apple Touch Bar support

WaveLab 9.5 is also compatible with the Apple Touch Bar of new MacBook computers. The context-related default set of user actions can be individually customized to have always access to your most used tools and functions at your fingertips. The context of the Touch Bar elements is linked to the currently selected WaveLab editor, so that you can define different tools and actions for any editor independently of each section.

WaveLab Pro 9 also lets you adapt the layout to your individual needs by offering an easy-to-use new docking system, including settings for window transparency and window sliding behavior.

The ribbon and tab layout

The central area of WaveLab is based on a ribbon layout consisting of several individual tabs for the most often used WaveLab editing and mastering functions, such as View, Edit, Fades, Analysis, Render and more. All tabs are context sensitive and only appear dynamically. Switching between the different tabs is a breeze, as the entire ribbon bar is located close to the waveform.

Another advantage of the ribbon bar lies in its ability to provide fixed views of all functions. This way, the tools you’re working with are always visible in contrast to drop-down menus in older program layouts. The ribbon bar also includes the new File tab menu, grouping all functions together for setting up the project, as well as exporting audio material in different formats.

Organizing your project

WaveLab Pro 9 also introduces a new project concept based on File Groups. This allows you to individually group a bunch of single audio files and the resulting Audio Montage (into which the single files are then composed) in one framework — the File Group. In order to keep track of even the largest mastering projects, the new Project Manager displays your entire project structure in tree form, including File Groups and the audio files and Audio Montages they contain.

Redesigned Master Section

The renowned Master Section has received a major overhaul. The effect area has been expanded to twelve slots, providing highest flexibility for creating your individual plug-in mastering chain. The channel processing configuration can be determined for all plug-ins individually, including mid/side processing. This way, you can choose between your favorite plug-ins to process a stereo, mono or M/S configuration. Also the entire audio channel monitoring has been extended by M/S metering functions. The new Resampler provides direct access when changing the playback to a different sample rate.

New docking system

Functional layout is an important factor when working with software on a daily basis. WaveLab Pro 9 introduces a new multi-monitor friendly window docking system that allows for more flexible and easy window handling than ever before. WaveLab automatically suggests where you can dock-in a floating window by showing little arrows. Just drag a window to one of these areas to dock it at your chosen location. The WaveLab Control window has also been updated to four instances.

Individualize your WaveLab experience

This takes customization within WaveLab to a new level: not only can you change the position and size of windows and workspaces according to your personal preferences, now you can also customize the colors. WaveLab Pro 9 delivers three basic display themes: Light, Dark and the all-new Black Theme (available with the update to WaveLab Pro 9.0.20). And it doesn’t stop here! Apart from selecting one of three themes, you can adjust the color of single sections individually, such as for the Audio Editor, the Audio Montage and virtually all meters.

WaveLab includes a project concept based on File Groups. This allows you to individually group a bunch of single audio files and the resulting Audio Montage (into which the single files are composed) in one framework — the File Group. This also works for batch processing files.

Project Manager

Large projects often result in complex structures that need to be managed coherently and clearly. WaveLab Pro 9 helps you to keep track of your audio files and audio montages with the Project Manager. The Project Manager provides a tree structure view that lets you instantly see which files belong to which file group, how they are named and if they have been modified. You can even drag and drop files from the Project Manager into an Audio Montage or open a new Audio Editor.

Docking system

One of WaveLab’s biggest assets has always been its customizability, as the layout is an important factor when working with software on a daily basis. WaveLab comes with a docking system that offers a flexible and easy window handling and lets you arrange windows to your individual needs.

WaveLab Control

For even more convenience, the WaveLab Control section lets you group a freely selectable range of analysis tools in a dedicated space. This way, you can perfectly organize WaveLab’s excellent analyzing tools such as spectroscope, VU metering, spectrum metering and more. Individual combinations of analyzing tools can be saved and recalled at any time.

Broadcasting

An increasing number of broadcast companies rely on WaveLab in their daily work because of its outstanding stability and comprehensive feature set. From editing and processing operations for preparing broadcast-ready content, over batch conversion of large amounts of audio files through to individual system integration via scripting technologies — WaveLab is the premier choice for any kind of professional audio work.

State-of-the-art audio engine

WaveLab offers state-of-the-art 24-bit/384 kHz resolution and 32-bit floating-point precision, which results in exceptional sound quality and processing accuracy.

By being able to render audio files in more than 15 different formats, including a variety of high-quality encoders for each format, WaveLab offers utmost flexibility and compatibility in daily broadcast workflows.

Metadata, file support and scripting

WaveLab supports the MPEG 1 Layer 2 (M.U.S.I.C.A.M.) file format, which is commonly used in digital broadcast systems, as well as Broadcast WAV, next to more than 15 further audio formats, among them AAC iTunes, FLAC, MP3, OGG, including a variety of encoders and support for metadata. Also, WaveLab includes full DDP support.

But clearly the most exciting features for broadcasters are the scripting capabilities in combination with user presets and batch processing functions. When combined, these functions allow for perfect integration of WaveLab into existing workflows, including automated file import, format conversion and processing. Using the new API scripting interface WaveLab can run even difficult processing tasks in the background.

Interviews and field recording

WaveLab has established itself as one of the most popular solutions for capturing and producing interviews as well as for field recording applications. Its easy setup, high-quality audio recording and versatility with regards to analysis, editing and rendering including all professional formats combine to make WaveLab an ideal tool for broadcast companies, radio journalists, freelancers and hobby users alike.

Recording

WaveLab comes with an easy-to-use recording setup that can be opened simply by clicking the record button in the transport window. Once the input channels have been defined, WaveLab is ready to record in up to 192 kHz. The level meter provides an accurate indication of the rec level, while the disk capacity shows you the maximum time for your recording.

Multiple start-, stop- and pause-record options make sure you don’t miss the first bit of an interview. For the best overview, a solo button lets WaveLab disappear in the background and only leaves the recording setup open in a condensed form.

Exporting

Preparing for export / loudness processing

If your audio material is destined for broadcast, very often EBU loudness standards need to be considered. WaveLab offers loudness processing functions in both the Audio Editor and Audio Montage. Once you have arranged multiple interviews/field recording clips within the Audio Montage or you have edited/processed single files in the Audio Editor, you’re ready to use WaveLab’s powerful export functions. Choose from more than 15 popular file formats among them AAC iTunes, FLAC, MP3, OGG, including a variety of encoders. Exporting many files in one go can be done using the multi- render option, while the automatic naming scheme allows you to easily distinguish between the different files exported.

Podcasting

You can create a podcast for uploading to the internet simply by choosing the “Create Podcast” option in the File menu. The podcast feature is a complete online publishing toolset and allows you to create and publish podcasts on the internet. The simple and intuitive interface lets you produce podcasts from start to finish.

With built-in FTP capabilities, RSS 2.0 support and time-saving templates, the podcast solution in WaveLab provides everything needed. And with an iTunes account at hand, it is even possible to publish podcasts on iTunes, including the selection of specific iTunes categories.
